A delegation from the IFA met with Tánaiste Simon Coveney on Tuesday to discuss issues surrounding the sheep sector created by Brexit.

“Our delegation highlighted the need for a strong environmental scheme of up to €10,000 in the next CAP,” said IFA national sheep chair Seán Dennehy.

Issues raised with the Tánaiste included:

  • New Zealand lamb quota.
  • Impact of exchange rates.
  • Tariffs on UK imports.
  • Northern Ireland lamb imports.
  • The land bridge route.
  • The need for compensation.
  • Dennehy believes “sheep farmers are critical to environmental sustainability, especially in hill and mountain areas. It is essential that there is a strong environmental payment to farmers in the next CAP.”
