Some 2,500 farmers are to receive funding under the calf investment scheme, with approvals due to be issued this week.

The scheme's budget has been almost trebled from an original €1.5m to €4m to ensure all farmers who made an eligible application receive funding.

Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed said he was increasing the budget due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the significant demand for the scheme.

“The high application rate for this scheme is evidence of the strong commitment of Irish farmers to high standards of animal welfare. I am delighted to be in a position to fund every eligible application at the maximum grant rate,” the minister said.

Funding

Applicants who are successful will have 40% of the cost of calf feeding equipment covered by the Department, up to a maximum of €7,500.

“This represents a massive investment on Irish farms, and will further improve calf welfare and management," Minister Creed said.

“It is vital, especially in times such as these, that Ireland’s reputation in areas of animal health and welfare is not compromised, to ensure that the regard in which Irish agri-food produce is held across the world in maintained."
