One in four Irish people plan on making more meat-free meals, with women and people from Dublin the most likely to switch to vegetarian meal plans.

The SuperValu survey of 1,000 adults also found that 59% already made at least one meat-free meal a week.

Carbon footprint

The results confirm a rising trend among consumers to “flexitarianism” or part-time vegetarianism as more shoppers become concerned about the carbon footprint of beef.

Minister Michael Creed criticised the negative message of farming and climate change portrayed by media outlets at Tullamore Show on Sunday.

He insisted more needed to be done by the mainstream media to promote the positive grass-fed image of Irish beef.
