All-Ireland commercial titles for Donegal and Roscommon at Strokestown Show

A large commercial entry at Strokestown Show finished out the day, with the much-anticipated all-Ireland heifer and bullock championships taking place.

The Greenvale all-Ireland beef heifer championship was first to go under the watchful eyes of judge John Lynch, with the Limousin-cross heifer Dicey Black from Fergal Flanagan and Patrick Dyer emerging victorious.

This TVR-sired heifer is out of a pedigree Blue cow and won a host of prizes this summer. This win marks her third all-Ireland win in three weeks, including Limerick and Elphin.

Standing reserve in the class was another Limousin heifer, in the form of Peppa. This stylish heifer, brought out by the Maxwell brothers, has also been prominent at summer shows, collecting the senior Tullamore commercial championship and champion commercial at Balmoral Show. This one is sired by Craigatoke Jack and is out of a TVR-bred dam.

The Sweeney family all-Ireland beef bullock final also took place and closed out the day.

This class had a massive prize fund of €5,000, with the champion taking €1,300 of this and prizes also to every exhibitor.

Taking pole position here were Clive and Victor Barnett, Raphoe, Co Donegal. Their black bullock is sired by the Belgian Blue bull Empire, with the dam being the well-known show cattle producer Rosie, who is a Charolais-cross.

No stranger to success either, this one has taken championships at Oldcastle, Finn Valley, Claremorris, Bonniconlon, Cappamore and Mohill.

This breeding is well used to success, with a full brother to the champion taking the reserve championship in the same class at last year’s show.

Standing as reserve all-Ireland beef bullock champion was Roy and Clive Stevenson with a Charolais-bred animal.
