Kerry artist Susan Mills is looking for help from the farming community. Currently she is working on a book called The Human Rescuers. In this case the “rescuers” are the animals who have rescued humans.

Mills is calling on animal lovers to contribute to this book and tell their story about them and their pet.

In return, she will paint their pet and give them a gift of the portrait, the image of which will appear in the book with the story.

A scientist by trade, Mills trained in Teagasc Moorepark and is fascinated by the bond between humans and animals, and this is where the idea for this book stemmed from.

She is hoping to compile over 36 stories and already she has contributions from as far away as New York and as near as Dingle.

Some of the animals already selected for inclusion are Lambo, the sheep who thought he was a cow; George, the hen who led the life of a dog; and Peanut, the dog who leads the life of a queen.

Do you have a story about a special creature in your life that you would like to share?

The story can be about any aspect of your relationship with that special creature eg why your pet is so important in your life, how your pet came into your life, your pet’s rescue story if he/she is a rescue, a funny story about your pet etc.

The deal is you decide what you want to tell in a short story and send it with a clear digital image of the pet to Susan at animalartmills@gmail.com.
