The BETTER Farm NI programme is holding two autumn farm walks, with the first event taking place on Thursday 29 August.

Hosting the walk are Thomas and Paul Jamison from Dromore, Co Down. Their 100-acre farm carries 75 spring-calving suckler cows, with all male progeny finished as young bulls. The event will focus on the profitability of the intensive finishing system on the farm, as well as herd management, overall cattle performance and cow fertility.

The farm walk starts at 7pm and is open to everyone. The address is 34 Glen Road, Dromore, Co Down, BT25 1JX.

Fermanagh farm walk

The second farm walk will be hosted by Barry Carty from Garrison, Co Fermanagh, on Thursday 5 September. Two walks will be held this time, starting at 2pm and 7pm.

Barry operates a system with 40 autumn-calving and 20 spring-calving cows, which are predominantly bred to AI.

All progeny are sold live as strong weanlings and light stores, with steers averaging 445kg at 13.5 months when they were sold this spring.

The event will focus on the suckler system and the role that high-quality silage plays on the farm to improve animal performance and reduce concentrate costs. The farm address is 47 Brollagh Road, Garrison, BT93 4AE and this event is also free to attend.
