There was a nice offering of butchers’ lambs in Fermoy Mart for this week’s sale and they made up the bulk of what was on offer. Price-wise, €1.95/kg to €2.14/kg would have picked up most of the lambs in a sale of very consistent stock. Ewe lambs and wethers tended to be more in demand and they made a few cents more than any ram-only pens of lambs.

A pen of lambs with no rams, they weighed 39.5kg and sold for €81, €2.05/kg.

Speaking after the sale, mart manager Sean Leahy said: “Trade was very solid. There were a couple of lots around 53kg or 54kg, those real nice butchers’ lambs, and they were getting into €112 and a bit with it. Those types seem to be in demand and they seemed to have strengthened in price on last week.”

These ewe lambs averaged 52.7kg and sold for €103, €1.96/kg.

Lambs around the 50kg mark were making from €98 to €110, while factory lambs were thin on the ground and prices for these were closer to the €2/kg mark.

These ram lambs averaged 46kg and sold for €95, €2.07/kg.

Sean was satisfied with the sheep numbers going through what would be seen as a predominantly dairy area. He said: “Numbers are holding around the same and we’ll probably do similar numbers to last year.”

A pen of ram lambs, averaging 52.7kg they sold for €106, €2.01/kg.

Cull ewes were few in number, but sold very well. The price range for them was from €84 to a top of €115.

A pen of ram lambs with an average weight of 49kg, they made €90, €1.84/kg.

A mixed group of ewe and wether lambs, weighing 54kg they sold for €110, €2.01/kg.
