Tuesday evening’s special weanling sale at Roscommon Mart saw a strong entry of 250 bulls and heifers on offer. Mart manager Maura Quigley said that the trade was very strong on the night, but this was down to the quality of stock on offer. She said that the majority of bulls and heifers in the sale were R+ and U grades, which attracted buyers from all over the country.

Both bulls and heifers were met with plenty of farmer buyer demand. Bulls over 400kg sold mainly from €1,020 to €1,100, with some selling for over €1,240/head at the top of the market. The majority of bulls on offer in the sale were 300kg to 400kg types and these were met with the best demand.

Again, it was farmer buyers that dominated, with the majority selling from €850 to €950/head and some above this. There were a share of lighter bulls on offer. These sold mainly from €2.50/kg to €2.70/kg or €600 to €780/head, depending on weight and quality.

The heifer trade was equally as strong as the bull trade, with heifers from 300kg to 400kg selling mainly from €2.40/kg to €2.60/kg for average-quality types, with some top-quality heifers making close to €3.00/kg. Lighter heifers under 300kg sold from €2.60/kg to €3.00/kg.

Commission rates are 1.9% to the seller and €9 to the buyer.
