Saturday’s sale at Mohill mart saw strong numbers on offer for the time of year.

According to mart manager Stephen Hannon, the trade was well improved, with prices running at similar levels as they were in early summer before beef price pressure and continued Brexit uncertainty drove prices down. Most demand was coming from farmer buyers who were out to source stores after slaughtering cattle.

As it was a special heifer sale, there were few bullocks on offer. The trade for these was good and those over 500kg sold mainly from €1,185/head to €1,330/head. Stores from 400kg to 500kg sold from €745 to €1,000.

The heifer trade was strong and types over 600kg sold mainly from a low of €1,015 to a top price of €1,330/head. Forward stores from 500kg to 600kg sold for €2.00/kg on average, with top-quality U grades making over €2.30/kg. Stores from 400kg to 500kg were available in larger numbers and sold mainly from €2.00/kg to €2.20/kg for average-quality lots, with top-quality types selling to over €2.40/kg.

There was an entry of about 60 cull cows on offer. Top-quality types sold mainly from €500 to €600 along with the weight, while feeding cows sold mainly from €300 to €400 over.

Commission rates are 2% to the seller and €9 to the buyer with an entry fee of €2/head.
