A digestate management and demonstration event will take place in Co Cork on Thursday March 12.

The event is co-organised by NRGE consultants and Timoleague Agrigen Ltd and will take place on the farm and anaerobic digestion facility of Colin Bateman at Barryshall, Timoleague, Co Cork, P72 DY77.

The event takes place between 11am and 3pm and will be divided into four sessions focusing on various aspects of digestate.

What is digestate?

Digestate is the material remaining after the anaerobic digestion of a feedstock. It typically has a low dry matter (4% to 6%), with a high water content, a high pH (>8) and it is about 85% or more of the volume of the feedstock.

Its nutrient value generally depends on the feedstock material.

Digestate can be used as fertiliser, reducing costs to farmers while decreasing greenhouse gas emissions and chemical fertiliser applications.

What will be discussed?

One of the topics which will be explored on the day includes examining the benefits of using digestate as an organic fertiliser.

This session will look at the agronomic and environmental benefits of using digestate as part of a farm fertiliser plan.

The event will also have live demonstrations of sustainable low emission application methods on grassland and tillage areas.

This demonstration will be carried out in the surrounding fields subject to weather conditions.

A walk-through plant tour of the anaerobic digestion facility and the process of digestate production and pasteurisation will also be included on the day.

Finally, Teagasc will give a presentation on eutrophication of the water catchment.
