The turnout in early voting for the IFA election has been better than expected. Over 70 branches voted on Monday night, with a further 100 casting their ballots at branch AGMs on Tuesday. Branches in Cork, Rathnure in Wexford, and Tubber in Offaly reported similar numbers voting to the elections in 2013 and 2016. Many feared that the negativity around farming would lead to apathy among members.

In Cork, especially North Cork, John Coughlan’s home turf, a very strong turnout was registered.

In total, 945 branches will vote for both the presidential race and deputy presidential race between Brian Rushe and Thomas Cooney.
