“The weather is frustrating. It’s showery, you get rained off, and a mile down the road it’s still dry.

We’re cutting feed winter wheat on worn ground, it looks like we’re doing around 4t/ac. We’ve got an extra half tonne following maize. We were happy with the winter barley, particularly the six-row, as it exceeded 4t/ac. Grain quality is still good.

Straw demand was very strong, it always is around here, although we have no price established yet. We baled and wrapped the headlands for feeding.”

Jonny Greene, Levitstown, Co Kildare.

“We’ve made little progress in the last week, the rain at times has been biblical. Quality has been holding up, but crops are starting to degrade. I’ve peas to combine for Batchelors, and they are low to the ground now. Trafficability is also becoming an issue.

I’ve chopped a lot of straw, it’s better value back in the soil at current prices. We’re establishing cover crops on all fields, even where autumn planting is planned. I’m hoping to plant oilseed rape next week.”

Tony McGuinness, Ardee, Co Louth.

“We’re hoping to get a proper weather window by the weekend, the forecast is settling down. Quality is holding up well, we have cut some malt barley and it passed.

We’re over halfway through the harvest, so it’s mostly winter wheat left, with some spring oats. The straw hopper is on at times. We have some winter barley straw down a while and we might chop that with a converted JF forage harvester.”
