There was a top price of €10,000 for a 330kg Belgian Blue-cross heifer at the annual winter fair sale in Carrick-on-Shannon on Monday.

The record sale means the April-born heifer sold for over €30/kg. Seven animals made €5,000 or more on the day.

More than 150 weanling heifers were sold through the ring to average €4.70/kg. The average sale price settled at over €1,750. A remarkable trade was seen across the sections, with more than 300 animals finding new homes, representing an 80% clearance rate.

Almost 100 breeding heifers sold for an average of €3.11/kg, just shy of €1,750. The top price here was for an all-black yearling breeding heifer which sold for €4,000.

More than 50 of the 65 weanling bulls present sold to an average of €1,450 or €3.38/kg. Trade in the section was topped by a Limousin-cross bull calf which sold for €3,300.

The sale was organised by the Midland and Western Livestock Improvement Society.
