The Harry Ferguson safe driving award, organised by Macra na Ferime and supported by the Health & Safety Authority and Massey Ferguson, went to a team made up of Macra na Feirme young farmer of the year Daniel Hawthorne and kiwi farmer James Robertson.

Winners

Speaking at the awards, Macra national president Thomas Duffy said: "Macra na Feirme [is] committed to promoting safe farm practices at every opportunity.

“A team entered the competition with an international 'showdown' type approach; James Robertson, the New Zealand young farmer of the year, and Daniel Hawthorne, Macra na Feirme young farmer of the year, are outstanding winners of this year’s competition and the €1,000 top prize.”

Competition

Almost 90 young farmers participated in the safe driving competition over the duration of the Ploughing.

Each participant undertook a number of tractor driving tasks, including bale handling and stacking, reversing a trailer and a general knowledge quiz on safe farm practices.

Duffy also added: “We want to take this opportunity to thank the young farmer competitor teams from across Ireland who participated, along with our international entries."
