As reported in last week’s Irish Farmers Journal , the Irish Angus Cattle Society continue discussions with sponsors with regard to lowering the average daily weight gain limits for some of their major events.
The society had proposed that weight limits for bulls would drop to 1.5kg/day for bulls and 1.3kg/day for heifers, down from 1.7kg/day for bulls and 1.5kg/day for heifers at 2019 events.
Dropping the weight limits came in for strong criticism from some breeders
It’s understood that, following a council meeting on Tuesday night, these proposed weights will increase to 1.6kg/day for bulls and 1.4kg/day for heifers. These new weight limits come into play at the Irish Angus Cattle Society’s championships at Iverk Show, All-Ireland classes in the Strokestown Show and at the society’s Elite sale in December.
Dropping the weight limits came in for strong criticism from some breeders who felt the best animals in the breed would be excluded from the society’s flagship events. Event sponsors of prize money were also against the change as it was looked upon as cutting out genetically superior cattle.
