It’s fair to say learning grass in two days is impossible. Two years might be closer to the mark. However, a two-day course starting next week can be the start of that journey. We have set up a two-day autumn grassland management course in conjunction with Macra Skillnets with the first day next Wednesday 4 September that will bring you up to speed on grass measuring.

The course will specifically look at:

  • Putting a grass budget in place for September and October.
  • Understanding key measures like average farm cover, growth rate, etc.
  • Autumn grazing management tools.
  • Decisions

The decisions you make this autumn will have huge impact on spring grazing next year. Yes, now is the time to start thinking of spring 2020.

Every extra day at grass next spring is worth €2.70/cow/day, while every extra day at grass in the autumn is valued at €1.80/cow/day.

    Objectives

The two main objectives at this time of the year are keeping grass in the diet for as long as possible, and closing off paddocks in good time so they will have good quality and quantities of grass next spring.

The course kicks off next Wednesday 4 September, with the second day on Wednesday 25 September. The course will run from 11am to 4pm on the day, with lunch provided.

The course will be run on a farm outside Roscrea, Co Tipperary.

Please call Stephen on 087-669 6490 or Jack on 087-908 2651 if you are interested in doing the course and for more details. Limited spaces available for beef, sheep or dairy farmers.
