Four-hundred and eighty lots, comprising just under 700 cattle, were sold in Carnew Mart’s general sale on Saturday.

Bullocks

Bullocks weighing from 400-500kg made an average price of €1.67/kg – no change from last week. Friesian bullocks started at €1.15/kg and climbed up to €1.45/kg. That’s about €70 to €200 with the weight. Dairy-beef breeds, started at €1.50/kg and topped at €1.85/kg for lots showing O+ and even R grading potential.

Continentals in this weight band started at €1.85/kg and maxed out at €2.29/kg for a 458kg 17-month-old Charolais-cross. Very few continentals under 480kg broke the €1,000-mark.

From 500-600kg, bullocks averaged €1.68/kg – back a fraction for the week. Here, Friesians started at €1.25/kg and only a handful crossed €1.50/kg. Moving up in quality, dairy-beef lots ranged from €1.55/kg up to around €1.80/kg.

Continental cattle started at €1.85/kg and topped at €2.21/kg. It took a good store to make €2/kg.

Bullocks over 600kg averaged €1.62/kg. The good-quality continental bullock, still well under 30 months, made €1.85/kg and over.

Heifers

Store heifers, from 400-500kg averaged €1.82/kg for the sale. Dairy-cross lots started at €1.50/kg and, while most stayed under €1.75/kg, some excellent-quality Angus heifers made another 10c/kg on top of this. Continental heifers started at €1.70/kg and went to €2.22/kg. Good quality would make over €2/kg.

From 500-600kg, store heifers averaged €1.79/kg. Dairy-beef lots started at €1.40/kg and continental heifers continued up to €1.95/kg.

Commission rates were 1.5% to the seller and €10 to the buyer.
