Just over 570 lots went under the hammer at Friday’s general sale in Roscrea Mart.

Bullocks

Lighter stores from 350kg to 400kg were up 10c/kg for the week to a sale average of €2.04/kg.

Friesian lots sold for under €1.35/kg, but quality Angus and Hereford cattle were strong, rising to a tops of €1.95/kg.

Continental lots in this category ranged from €2.05/kg to €2.65/kg.

Moving up the weight bands, 400kg to 500kg bullocks averaged €2.05/kg for the sale, a rise of 20c/kg from the week previous.

By breed, Friesians put a floor on the price at €1.45/kg up to €1.70/kg.

Dairy-beef breeds ranged from €1.70/kg to €1.90/kg and continentals started at €1.95/kg up to a high of €2.50/kg.

Forward 500kg to 600kg stores were up 10c/kg too and averaged €2.08/kg.

It was predominantly all continental lots here and these ranged from €1.50/kg for plainer lots up to €2.65/kg for nice-quality lots.

Heavy 600kg-plus bullocks averaged €1.88/kg for the sale and R+ grades and above made upwards of €2.10/kg.

Store heifers

In the store heifer ring, lighter lots fared out best. Table 2 gives a full breakdown.

From 350kg to 400kg, the average was €2.03/kg. That’s up almost 15c/kg for the week.

Best-quality lots hovered between €2.20/kg and €2.30/kg primarily.

From 400kg to 500kg, the average was 5c/kg higher for the week at €1.99/kg.

Quality types averaged €2.20/kg, but plainer heifers had a strong showing and rose 10c/kg for the week to €1.80/kg.

Heavy 500kg-plus lots averaged €2.02/kg, the best on quality commanding 15c to 20c/kg more.
