Headford Mart in Co Galway has been given the green light by Galway County Council for a new sales ring and sheds to be built.

Earlier this year, it was granted permission to build a new canteen and facilities.

Planning for the new development was lodged at the end of June, with the council deciding last week to grant permission.

The new ring and sheds will cover an area of 805m2.

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal Headford Mart manager Joe Wynne said the building work will get under way in the new year.

We need to make our cattle yard bigger, we’re caught for space

“We’re getting a new ring, making the cattle yard bigger, a canteen, new offices and new toilets.

"The whole lot will be in around €850,000.

“We re-roofed the existing offices and the ring during race week.

“We need to make our cattle yard bigger, we’re caught for space.

"With the two rings going, we’ll need more people employed every Saturday,” Wynne said.

Weanling sales will start at Headford Mart on 7 September with a Charolais weanling show and sale.
