Limousin bulls sell to 4,200gns

Limousin bulls sold to a top price of 4,200gns at the autumn show and sale organised by the NI Limousin Club in Dungannon Mart last week.

The sale-topping animal, Killydunn Ozzy, was forwarded by the Quinn Brothers, Kilrea. This August 2018-born animal was sired by Mereside Lorenzo and sold to Richard Walker, Stewartstown.

In total 14 of the 17 bulls on offer were sold to an average of £2,820, up by £195 from last autumn’s sale.

Nine female animals made an average of £1,814, with three heifers going unsold.

Fire at Devenish Nutrition

A major fire at the main Belfast distribution centre of animal feed company Devenish Nutrition at the end of last week saw up to 64 firefighters and 13 appliances attend the scene.

Located on Duncrue Street, the fire, which is believed to have started accidently, resulted in the road being closed over the weekend and the smell of burned animal feed hanging over the city.

Despite the incident, a company spokesperson confirmed it hopes to continue trading without interruption, given that production has not been affected at a separate mill facility. “We have been able to use other premises and functions for distribution and to base employees during this period and are focused on maintaining business as normal” they said.

CAFRE business support events

Farmers can hear about various CAFRE schemes that could potentially benefit their business at a series of events organised over the next two weeks.

That includes the Business Development Group (BDG) scheme, which is currently open to applications from all farmers.

A new addition to the scheme is an Environmental farming option. The BDG application window closes at 4pm on Friday 23 January 2020.

Also covered at the CAFRE information event will be the new Technology Demonstration Farms scheme, along with more details on the Farm Innovation Visits and training offered as part of Farm Family Key Skills.

The CAFRE events take place at Greenmount campus on Tuesday 26 November (2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm), Enniskillen campus on Thursday 28 November (7pm to 9pm) and Loughry Campus on Tuesday 3 December (7pm to 9pm).

CAP advance paid to 99% of NI farmers

Figures released by DAERA show that 99% of NI farmers received advanced CAP payments this year.

A total of £194.5m was paid to 23,592 farm businesses in advanced payments worth 70% of claims. This includes 88% of farm businesses that were subject to land inspections.

It is the fourth year in a row that DAERA has achieved a record payment performance and NI remains the only region of the UK to issue advanced payments.

The remaining 30% of claims will be issued to NI farmers from 2 December 2019.
