In these times of self-isolation, social distancing and overall uncertainty, it’s nice to know that there are still local businesses out there that you can support from the comfort and safety of your own home.

Those who are relatively low risk and don’t have to self-isolate will have to brave the shops for some items and it’s been noted that if you are low risk and physically able, you shouldn’t be signing up for grocery deliveries (such as Tesco) right now.

But there are so many food items in Ireland that are ethically produced, top quality and are able to be shipped right to your door. Here are a few of my current favourites.

Coffee beans and accessories

  • Barna-based Calendar Coffee, for the duration of the COVID-19 crisis, will be donating 30% of its sales to cafes in Ireland that have had to close their doors.
  • Ponaire Coffee is offering free shipping for orders over €50. They offer a wide variety of beans, accessories and gift boxes.
  • Cloudpicker coffee offers free delivery on a minimum order of a 1kg bag of coffee beans. They also sell speciality food products.
  • The Old Barracks is running a competition for online shoppers – you could win a year’s supply of coffee delivered to your home (1kg bag per month) if you make any online order during the lockdown period. Your name is automatically added to their weekly draw.
  • Meat

  • James Whelan Butchers is offering free next-day delivery on orders over €100.
  • Gubbeen Farmhouse Products has opened a new online shop. Order a pre-packed delivery box, ranging in price from €35 to €100, or create your own box from their individual products.
  • You can order free-range pork charcuterie like chorizo, salamis and coppa for delivery from The Wooded Pig.
  • The Premium Butcher offers free, next day delivery for orders over €100 placed before 12pm anywhere in the Republic of Ireland.
  • Cheese

    CAIS – the association of Irish farmhouse cheesemakers – has compiled a list of Irish cheeses available for online purchase and home delivery on their website.

  • Sheridan’s Cheesemongers is delivering its extensive ranges of Irish and international cheeses along with antipasti, charcuterie, wine, gift boxes and more.
  • Cashel Blue is delivering food boxes filled with cheese, fresh vegetables, juices and meat, which can be ordered on their website. You can also just buy their cheese, if that’s what you’re looking for.
  • Vegetables

  • Mash Direct is selling fresh vegetable accompaniments by the box with different variations available.
  • Annie’s Organic Farm in Tipperary is now delivering fresh vegetable boxes as far afield as Dublin. Small boxes start at €20.
  • Ballymakenny Farm will be shipping its potatoes nationwide as early as next week, charging €2.50 per kilo for its dark purple violetta, pink fir apple and Mayan golds, among others. Pplease note there is a €5 delivery fee. They ask you get in touch via Instagram, Facebook or Twitter to arrange a delivery.
  • Con Traas is offering nationwide delivery on The Apple Farm’s product line, including a variety of sparkling and still juices.
  • Seafood

  • Gannet Fishmongers in Galway is offering nationwide home delivery for a minimum order of €35.
  • Hartley’s Seafood of Co Waterford is offering collection and delivery services via telephone. Call 087-2963 633 for more information or to place an order.
  • Burren Smokehouse in Lisdoonvarna has an online shop for its hot and cold smoked salmon and many other items, including its Burren Box which contains local honey, mustard and cheese in addition to the salmon.
  • Mag and Ger Kirwan are selling their Goatsbridge trout products on their website. Deliveries usually arrive within 48 hours.
  • Wine, Beer & Spirits

  • Le Caveau in Kilkenny offers a variety of wines with different price points and from different regions in its online wine shop.
  • Molloy’s Liquor Store has a wide range of beers, wines and spirits for online purchase and home delivery.
  • Glendalough Distillery is selling its range of gins and whiskeys online for home delivery.
  • Other

  • Avoca is offering home delivery service for its food range from within a 10km radius of any of its store locations.
  • McCambridges in Galway is shipping speciality grocery boxes nationwide. Check out the baking essentials box for €19.25.
  • Ardkeen Quality Food Store in Waterford is offering nationwide deliveries on its range of grocery items and fine foods.
