The renowned Stirling bull sales took place earlier this week, with the Simmental and Charolais breeds taking pride of place. This week, we look at the Simmental breed. .

Trade proved rather tricky in the Simmental ring, with 12 fewer bulls sold on the year. That said, the average price increased slightly by £64 to settle at £5,039.

In total, three of the 86 bulls sold hit five-figure sums. Two of these were purchased by the same buyer, without whom the average sale price may have dropped significantly.

Securing the overall top price and the title of overall champion in the pre-sale show was Wolfstar Jackaroo 18. This bull was bred by Mr A King and sold for 18,000gns. Sired by the 11,000gns Team Celtic, he out of Wolfstar Ellie, whose pedigree is homebred on both sides. This serious carcase bull was tapped out by judge Phillip Simmers, who later backed his decision by securing the champion.

This was only the start for Mr Simmers, who also secured the second-top priced bull at 17,000gns. This bull, Wolfstar Jimmy Choo, again came from the pen of Mr King and was awarded the reserve senior champion in the pre-sale show.

This Islavale Guy 15-sired bull is out of Team Celtic-sired dam Wolstar Forget-me-not.

The last of the bulls to hit the five-figure mark was Finlarg Jaguar from Kate and Alan McNee. Sired by Team Drambuie, this bull placed first in his class and carried positive indices for calving ease. Securing the bull at a bid of 10,000gns was S McClymount and sons.

Ranfurly Jackpot J12 from the Hazelton family in Northern Ireland was next in line when sold for 9,000gns. This first-prizewinner in the pre-sale show is sired by Auchorahan ACDC and out of the Irish-bred Raceview Fancywinty. Securing the red rosette bull was Philiphaugh Estates.

Matching Jackpot at the price was another first-prizewinner, this time Corskie Jackpot. Brought out by Messrs Green, this September 2018-born bull is a son of the 22,000gns 2014 Highland Show champion Dirnanean Bradley 10. Dam of this red and white bull, Corskie Frolic, is classified EX90. Securing Jackpot with a bid of 9,000gns was JS Gunn.

The Corskie team also exhibited the breed’s reserve intermediate and reserve overall champion Corskie Jalex 18. This bull is also sired by Bradley, with his dam an EX94-classified Celtic Rock daughter. Securing the reserve champion at 7,000gns was C&G Thomson.

One last bull made 9,000gns and that was the junior bull Saltire Jaguar 18. Sired by the same bull as the champion and high seller, Team Celtic, he is out of a Kilbride Farm Dragoon-bred dam. He was the choice of JA Griffin.

Next best at 8,200gns was Broombrae Joey 18 from Mr Clark. This August 2018-born bull is sired by Corskie Elgin and is out of a dam by Team Wisconsin.

Two bulls hit the 8,000gns mark. First at the money was Manor Park John from Mr Houldey. This Corskie Ebay son is out of a Blackford Worzel-bred dam and was the pick of Floors Farming.

Matching the money was Anne MacPherson with her bull Blackford Jumbo 18. This bull is sired by the homebred Blackford Galaxy, which was shown with great success, while the dam is a daughter of Kilbride Farm Doubleaction.

Mrs MacPherson also sold her second bull Blackford Juggernaut at 7,500gns. Once again sired by Galaxy, he is out of a Kilbride Farm Strabane-bred dam. Securing Juggernaut was Ardhuncart Farms.

Heather Duff was next in the money when she sold her June 2018-born bull Pitmudie Joskin 18 for 7,200gns. This stylish bull is sired by Dellfield Goldeneye 15 and is out of an Omorga Volvo-bred dam. JW Fullerton and Sons were the successful bidders on this third-prizewinning bull.

Two bulls hit the 7,000gns mark. First was one of the Barlow family’s exhibits Denzies Jamie. This heifer’s calf is homebred on both sides, with Dinton Nautical and Bosahan Dynamo in the back breeding. Top bidder here was Craighill Farms.

Jaw Farm paid the same figure for Islavale Jeronimo. This Ranfurly Confederate son is out of a Curaheen Bandit-bred dam and a full brother to the 24,000gns Islavale Heuston.

Despite being one of the youngest bulls in the sale, his presence and easy calving pedigree ensured prospective buyers stayed around.
