Farm facts

  • Martin farms part-time, while also working in Aurivo Livestock Mart.
  • He owns 36ac of good-quality ground and has another 10ac of rented land.
  • Martin runs a herd of 18 suckler cows, predominantly Limousin-cross.
  • He used 100% AI, mainly Belgian Blue bulls such as STQ and BB2280.
  • Some Limousin sires – EBY and LM2014 – are used on maiden heifers. Herd replacements are bought in.
  • Martin's strategy is to breed weanling bulls for export and weanling heifers for show breeding.
  • Martin also runs a flock of 120 ewes, selling lambs through the South-Mayo Lamb Producer group.
