The trade for commercial fat stock continues to fly both here and across the water.

While Carrick winter fair boasted a new record price of €10,000 last week, the Welsh winter fair, held the same weekend, saw a top price of £10,800.

The show’s supreme champion came from the Limousin section in the form of Rizzo, which later claimed the top price.

Brought out by Messrs Wilkinson and Marwood, based in Yorkshire, the champion was purchased by meat wholesaler Mark Webster.

This was just one of 24 animals that Mr Webster bought during the fair, spending in excess of £47,000 on the exhibits up for sale.

Rizzo was bought at Carlisle in March at the Borderway Spring Show of suckled calves, where she stood as reserve heifer champion.

Originally bred by P and A Jarman, the June 2018-born heifer is a daughter of Netherhall Jackpot. This red Limousin-cross heifer weighed in at 672kg, meaning she sold at over £16/kg.

Taking the reserve overall championship was the purebred heifer Beulah Otty, bred by Mervyn and Jackie Price and exhibited by John and Ifan Philips.

Having claimed the Limousin and overall pedigree titles, she stood second overall to Rizzo.

The 553kg Beulah Otty was born in May 2018 and is a daughter of Gunnerfleet Hicks, out of an Ampertaine Foreman daughter.

This heifer had previously won her class at Agri Expo and now heads to the Red Ladies sale next week in Carlisle.

In the baby beef section, top award went the way of RW and LA Jones with their homebred Limousin-sired heifer calf Treacle. Weighing in at 336kg, she was later sold for £6,200.

This March 2019-born calf was top of over 70 claves entered to claim the continental and overall heifer awards.

Standing reserve here was Foxy Lady, brought out by Chris and Nigel Pennie and bred by IP Jones.

While the cattle stood as the main attraction, the fair also attracted large numbers of ovine, swine and poultry.
