Donegal has continued its fundraising campaign for Cancer Care West with a charity livestock auction held last Friday in Ballybofey and Stranorlar Mart, Co Donegal.

Over the past number of weeks, the organising committee has been securing livestock to go under the hammer. Through donations from around 200 farmers, 229 sheep and 46 cattle were secured.

Over 300 farmers attended the auction which saw all animals sold. The top price paid on the night was for an 18-month-old 500kg Limousin Bullock which made €5,100.

Other notable prices paid on the night were €500 for a Suffolk breeding hogget, €500 for a Texel breeding hogget and €2,070 was paid for a Simmental breeding heifer.

Other items such as fluke doses, vet vouchers, concrete tanks and AI straws were also auctioned on the night.

Events

Donegal IFA has organised three events of the fundraising campaign. The fundraising drive for Cancer Care West kicked off with a recent tractor run and Dyno test day in east Donegal. Over 100 tractors took part in the event.

The second event was the livestock auction while the final event consists of a buffet and auction of other donated goods and services. This will be held on Friday 18 October in the Clanree Hotel, Letterkenny, Co Donegal. This auction is open to farmers and members of the public to attend.
