A new variety of perennial ryegrass bred in NI is set to be launched on the local market by Barenbrug UK in the spring of 2020.

The new variety, known as Callan, was bred by AFBI at their grass breeding station at Loughgall. Callan is a late heading diploid plant.

Heading out date is typically around 1 June, making it highly compatible for inclusion in dual purpose mixes used for grazing and silage harvesting.

Yields

Yields are particularly high under grazing systems, yielding 3% more grass than control plants in trials.

Callan has been bred as a replacement for Tyrella, another highly popular ryegrass variety since it was launched in 2008.
