The Irish Hereford Breed Society hosted its annual calf show in Tullamore over the weekend, resulting in a double championship win for the Rebel County.

Tasked with judging the breed’s autumn highlight was Non Thorne of the Studdolph herd in Wales, who awarded the male and female overall championships to Cork breeders.

Taking home the title of senior bull calf and overall male champion was the November 2018-born bull Appel 1 Mighty. This stylish young bull was bred and exhibited by Clonakilty-based brother and sister duo John and Beatrice Appelbe and ticked all the boxes for the Welsh judge, having come out of the first class of the day, despite being one of the youngest in it. Mighty is a son of the 2017 overall National Hereford champion of the year and Appel herd stock bull Solpoll 1 Lawman, while the dam is the homebred Appel 1 Mighty.

Standing top of the opposite sex to claim senior heifer and overall female champion was Ballymartle 1 Dolly. This October 2018-born heifer is a daughter of Solitude 1 Marshall and goes back on an Appel bred cow, this time Appel 1 Dolly 2. Brought out by relatively new breeder Michael Dullea from Drimoleague, Co Cork, the stylish young heifer was purchased back in September at the Ballymartle herd dispersal.

Standing reserve overall female champion and indeed reserve senior heifer was Griananpoll 1 Orange T863. This November 2018-born heifer was brought out by long-time breeders Tom and Anselm Fitzgerald, Moate, Co Westmeath. This Fabb 1 Northern Star daughter was at a number of shows throughout the summer shown alongside her first-calved mother Grianan Orange R786, who won a host of prizes.
