Adverse weather conditions across the EU is one of the the key reasons for an expected decrease in oilseed output in 2019.

EU oilseed production is expected to reach a seven-year low in 2019/20 at 29.7 million tonnes (Mt), which is 9% lower than last year and 7% below average (see Figure 1).

The decrease in area is driven largely by a reduced area of rapeseed in 2019. Difficult sowing conditions led to reduced rapeseed planted area across key EU rapeseed producing countries in 2018.

2019 rapeseed crops have been negatively affected by hot conditions in many EU areas.

On top of that, 2019 rapeseed crops have been negatively affected by hot conditions, especially during the grain filling period in late June (particularly in Germany and Poland).

This has resulted in an expected 16% decrease in output levels compared with last year, close to 17Mt.

EU sunflower and soya bean production are stable compared with last year, at 10Mt and 3Mt respectively.

Production is above average due to increased sowing areas, especially soya beans in Italy and Romania, and sunflower in France and Romania.

Increased imports

EU imports are anticipated to increase slightly to compensate for the drop in rapeseed production and sustain the production of oil meals in the EU.

The total production of meals is expected to reach 30.5Mt this year (-2% compared with last year).
