IFA President Tim Cullinan called on the Taoiseach to use his veto rather than accept a cut to the CAP budget.

He was speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal at Thursday’s tractor protest outside the summit where heads of state were assembling to discuss the proposals from Council President Charles Michel which would see over €2,000 taken from the €14,400 average CAP payment received by Irish farmers.

He was joined by Sonja De Becker Chair of Boerenbond, the Flemish farmers union, who along with the Fédération Wallonne de l’Agriculture, the farm organisation from the French-speaking area of Belgium, were the main contributors of the tractors for the protest.

She also spoke to the Irish Farmers Journal saying it was good for the EU to be ambitious in other areas but that this ambition required new funding.

Farmers from the two main Belgian farm organisations, the Flemish Boerenbond and Wallonia’s Fédération Wallonne de l’Agriculture staged the tractor protest ahead of the EU Council meeting to consider the latest CAP budget proposals in Brussels today.

CEJA, the umbrella body in Brussels for young farmer organisations including Macra and Copa Cogeca, who are the umbrella organisation of which IFA is a member, also took part.

Farmers from across Belgium brought tractors and parked on two roads that feed into the Schuman roundabout which was closed today ahead of the leaders’ summit.

Despite the strong feelings about proposed budget cuts, it was a good-natured and orderly protest with the police on duty actively stewarding the parking of tractors in an orderly manner.
