Finnish manufacturer Elho returned to Agritechnica this year with its grass equipment range.

Catching the eye of many was the updated Cobra 7710T trailed forage harvester.

Although the 7710XT has been on the market for a number of years, Elho has updated its pickup.

The firm has moved away from its steel tine conditioner-type design, which fed grass back into an auger and then into the feed rollers, to a design not too dissimilar to a belt merger.

It incorporates a 3m-wide camless pick-up with plastic tine bands and two pre-compression rollers.

Once crop has been picked up, it is then conveyed using a 1m-deep ribbed belt, feeding the full 1m-wide feed channel and chopping unit. The units on board hydraulic system powers the pickup.

The 1,300kg pickup is hydro-pneumaically suspended and folds vertically for transport.

The revised pickup has hydro-pneumatic system and two steel caster wheels underneath for support. When it comes to transport, the 1,300kg pickup folds vertically.

When chopping, the rear wheel extends telescopically by 750mm (0.75m) to improve overall stability.

You might wonder why the Cobra’s chopping unit and feed rollers have been designed so that grass enters 90 degrees to the swath direction.

The Elho Cobra 7710XT is rated for an input power between 250hp and 400hp.

Well, the reason for this is so that it can be directly driven via the tractor's PTO, cutting out any potential losses associated with a 90 degree gearbox system.

Chopping unit

The Cobra 7710T uses a 1,000mm (1m) wide, 770mm (0.77m) chopping drum, with 32 knives configured in a ‘V’ formation.

This inline setup is suited for an input power ranging from 250hp to a considerable 400hp. The 5.8m-high, hydraulically controlled spout, along with all other functions, can be controlled through the new ISObus control system.
