With the introduction of the dairy section to this year’s show, over 150 entries in total were catalogued. Martin Regan was in fine voice as MC. Recent arrivals, Martin’s granddaughter Mallaigh and young Willow Meehan, granddaughter of veteran showman Michael Oliver, both had their first day out at a show.

This show had just so much happening with carriage driving, ploughing, line dancing lessons, indoor cattle showing facilities, live music, old-style threshing, vintage cars, children’s entertainment and much more keeping the large crowd in attendance entertained. Special guest Anna May McHugh opened the show with very poignant words regarding the role of local shows in enhancing rural life in Ireland and the huge time and effort show committees put into running these shows.

The cattle section started with the junior and senior young handlers which went to Nichola Mulligan and Aidan Kinahan.

Charolais

Charolais champion for Kieran Doddy. / Tricia Kennedy

One of the largest breed entries was for the Charolais section, with judge Gloria McCann in charge. Gloria tapped out Kieran Doddy’s September 2018 heifer Tubbernadur Ohsha ET as her champion. This girl is out of a French sire Hercules M and a French cow Elisa. Ohsha picked up several championships and red rosettes in the summer. The reserve championship also went to Sligo with the Coolbock Charolais herd of Gerry Sweeney taking the honours.

Simmental

William Gubbins’ recent purchase Suirville Kim took the Simmental championship. This October 2018 heifer is by Ballinalare Farm Galaxy out of dam Carbery Gemma. Reserve was a repeat of last year and went to Brian and Olivia Flanagan for their October 2017-born heifer Farm Jenny by Aivoch DeuterPP.

Limousin

Limousin and Interbreed champion for Richard O'Beirne. / Tricia Kennedy

Richard O’Beirne took both champion and reserve in the Limousin section which finished out a very successful year for the Milburn Limousin herd. Champion was the March 2018-born Milburn Notable sired by Goldies Jackpot and out of dam Milburn Bobby Dazzler. Reserve went to Milburn Nightingale who was a prolific winner throughout the summer.

Millburn Notable later went on to take the interbreed championship for Richard O’Beirne with Billy Gubbins’ Simmental heifer in reserve.

Angus

As with the Limousin championship, champion and reserve honours went to the one stable in the Angus section with Tom Reynolds and the Knockadrinan herd taking all honours.

Dairy

This year saw a very welcome addition to the show schedule with the introduction of the dairy cattle section. Two heifer and two cow classes were hotly contested under the watchful eye of judge Kevin Flynn. For those not familiar with dairy cattle, Kevin’s narrative at the end of each class and before tapping out his champion was an informative insight into the world of dairy judging. Michael Freeney’s 2014-born senior cow Mirah Ativ Kathy took the overall championship. Mirah Ativ Kathy is sired by Ardnasalem Seven ET and was shown by Kane Boal. Reserve champion went to the junior cow Sprule Grove Chelios M Illinda for Aidan Foody.

Commercial

The Commercial section was judged by Shane Giltinane. There was a large entry, especially in the calf classes where red rosettes were hard won. In the end, Donegal took the honours again with overall commercial champion going to Pearse McNamee for his very stylish heifer calf. This girl had numerous wins this summer including Tullamore Show. Clive and Roy Stevenson were second to the overall champion in the under 400kg class, and their Limousin cross heifer calf went on to take the reserve championship.

White coats can now be washed and put away for another year.
