Three men have been arrested in connection with a series of illegal sheep butchery offences that occurred in England over the summer, as reported by the Irish Farmers Journal.

Northamptonshire police arrested Robert Iordan (23), Florin Nutu (35) and Voirel Manu (38) and charged them with conspiracy to steal in relation to the slaughter and illegal butchery of sheep and lambs.

The men, all from Birmingham, allegedly committed the offences between 22 June and 7 October 2019.

Operation Stock

In total, 12 reports of illegal butchery were made to Northamptonshire Police during this time, where over 40 lambs were reported to have been killed.

The incidents prompted Northamptonshire police to launch ‘Operation Stock’. This investigation eventually led to the arrest of Iordan and Nutu in the early hours of Monday 7 October, following the discovery of nine illegally butchered sheep near Welford the previous evening. Manu was arrested later in Birmingham on the same date and all were charged on Tuesday 8 October.

“We know these crimes caused a great deal of upset and anger to both the owners of the animals and to rural communities,” said Inspector Tracy Moore.

“The charging and remand of three people in relation to Operation Stock represents a huge amount of teamwork within our force and our neighbouring forces, and I’d like to thank our farming and rural communities again for the support they have offered throughout the investigation,” she added.
