Diesel prices continue to ease

Prices for red diesel continue to ease and are now at their lowest level since early January. Quotes for 1,000 litres of red diesel this week are around £600, including VAT, or 60p/l. Back in mid-November, the same quantity of diesel was priced at £615, including VAT, while back in September, diesel prices were above 65p/l.

Prices for derv are holding relatively steady with quotes around £1,248 for 1,000 litres or, 125p/l including VAT.

Crude oil prices have steadied after fears of a supply shortage back in September in response to air strikes in the middle-east. Crude oil has eased in value over the past week from US$64/barrel to $62/ barrel.

Fynn tops PLI genomic ranking

The young Holstein sire, Bomaz Fynn, has taken number one position in the new genomic rankings published by AHDB Dairy. The bull, a Frazzled son from a Rubicon dam, has a Profitable Lifetime Index (PLI) of £878 and breaks the 50kg fat barrier for the first time in a top 20 sire.

In second place with a PLI of £871 is Denovo 14566 Crosby, a son of DG Charley, and again from a Rubicon dam.

Lidl to cut waste

Lidl NI has announced the launch of its “Waste Not” initiative, rolling out across all 39 stores from Thursday.

It involves a significant price reduction on a range of chilled food products that have reached their best before date but are still suitable to eat.

Fresh meat, poultry, and fish products priced £3 or less will reduce to £0.90, while those priced over £3 will reduce to £2. Fresh chilled products, such as cheeses and cold cooked meats priced £1 or less will reduce to £0.20, while those priced over £1 will reduce to £0.70.

UK red meat consumption falling

The latest Kantar consumer data shows that red meat consumption within the UK has fallen by 1.4% in the period from November 2018 to October 2019, with the value of red meat sales down 1.2%.

There is a rise in mince purchases but continued declines in steak cuts and roasting joints.
