The US imposition of 25% tariff on EU butter imports will affect any European dairy shipments from now on.

Large dairy exports were despatched prior to the tariffs coming into effect in late 2019, effectively avoiding them.

The tariffs were a retaliation by the US on the EU for EU support of the aircraft manufacturer, Airbus.

However, the EU could soon impose its own retaliatory tariffs on the US, if another WTO dispute relating to the American plane manufacturer Boeing rules in the EU’s favour.

Ahead of the future trade agreement talks with the UK, the European Commissioner for Trade Phil Hogan has twice visited the US in recent weeks in an attempt to build a relationship that would lead to a removal of US tariffs on EU imports.
